Blown Insulation Installation Guidelines

Things to Know About Blown-in Insulation

The 3 most common types of blown insulation installation are loose-fill fiberglass, cellulose, and rock wool, and each one comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. The minimum insulation values do vary by region, and you can find out what your recommended values are by contacting a professional insulation company. The higher the thermal resistance or R-value is, the greater the insulating will be. Not all types of blown-in insulation have the same thermal value, but in many cases, even adding a little insulation is better than none at all.

Loose-fill Fiberglass:

This light insulation is made from glass that is heated to a liquid, after which it is then spun into thin fibers. When it is blown into attics and wall spaces, it can offer an average R-2.5 thermal value, the higher the number, the more insulating effect you will receive.

Cellulose:

For more eco-minded homeowners, this is the insulation of choice, mainly because it is made from shredded recycled cardboard or newspaper. This is the most common type available today and is chemically treated to resist both mold and fire. However, the downside to this is if it gets wet it will lose its fluffiness and become soggy and compacted, which in turn reduces its R-value.

Rock Wool:

Also known as “mineral wool,” this blown-in insulation is made using blast furnace slag, this is a byproduct of firing iron and iron ore. The slag needs to be heated and combined with other minerals, after which it is spun into an airy product that looks very much like raw sheep’s wool. Rock wool has a thermal value of R-3.3, however, it is more expensive than either of the aforementioned.
